It truly ages like a fine wine and I think it’s one of a select group of films from the time that holds up just well now as it did then. The making of the film is an amazing story and I really recommend Cocteau’s journal about it.

I think it’s hard not to watch Beauty and the Beast or The Little Mermaid without drawing connections to Ashman’s life, and there’s something really interesting to said about how gay and queer people can be drawn to fairytales like these, with themes of transformation and identity, and happy endings. :)
